Personally, I don't think there is anything wrong with eating soy. If you really think about it, almost every food could be found to have some kind of negative consequence if you eat it. Some of the meats we eat contain special chemicals, synthetic growth hormones, etc. that affect us. In fact, it is said that because of today's meat, children are hitting puberty at a younger age. Also, nitrates which are found in many different kinds of meats, can eventually convert to nitrosamines that are believed to cause cancer.
It can also be looked down upon if you eat too much of one certain type of food. For example, even though oranges are very healthy and good for you, if you were to ONLY eat oranges, that would be very bad for your system. The same thing could be said for many other things...even water! If you drink too much water it's bad for you; you could die. And yet, water is one of the most healthiest things for you and it is extremely good for your body in the right amounts.
So, even if there are high levels of phytoestrogen, etc. in soy, I still think soy is perfectly fine to eat. I say go for it! It's not like you are stuffing your face with french fries, funnel cakes, and other deep fried items :) Compared to lots of other foods, I think soy is relatively good for you.

Jaden- I completely and totally agree with you!! I was discussing the whole, "Is soy good for you or not?" situation with my family, and my dad had pointed out that anything can be bad as well as good; it just all depends on your standpoint. And a word I hear a lot these days is moderation. Moderating the amount of soy you consume is important, just like moderating the amounts of other items you consume. Soy does have its benefits and drawbacks, just like many other foods do.
ReplyDeleteit is perfectlly fine to eat soy if its in something me personally think its gross but everyone is differnt
ReplyDeleteAfter reading this and Erica comment id have to say i was trying to push the word moderation. I think its the key to making any item of food healthy or unhealthy for somebody. Its immposible to tell, but let me put it this was, would it be better to eat soy everyday or actual meat. Im not an expert but natural meat would have to be my guess. I dont know though? GREAT BLOG JK!
ReplyDeleteI would have to agree with everyone one-hundred percent. I was in a recent Speech and Debate tournament, and the topic was making coffee illegal for minors. Ridiculous, right? Well my argument was the same as all of yours: foods are okay if they are taken in moderation. Moderation is definitely a key term when talking about any food product. I've always been told the phrase "too much of a good thing is a bad thing." That proves to be true with any food you eat. Nice blog Jrrrden!
ReplyDeleteGood job Jaden,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that you need to regulate what you eat (haha no funnel cakes!) and as long as you make sure that you eat in moderation, then you should be relatively fine. I also agree that compared to all of the chemicals and hormones that you can find in meat, soy could be healthier if it's fermented. But still, just because it doesn't contain the same additives as meat doesn't mean that there isn't the possibility of there being something in the soy products that isn't good for you.
Finally somebody else sees it my way! I feel that this whole soy thing is being overanalyzed and there is nothing wrong with eating soy. Everything has negative and positive consequences. If you're honestly worried about dying from a soy diet you're probably more likely to die falling down the stairs. So don't bother getting up from your computer if you're worried about the health risks. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteJust to point out, a handful of people have died from water intoxication. I can recall a couple years ago somebody dying from a water drinking contest. They tried to win a Nintendo Wii or something. Yeah, so don't drink water or you can die apparently.
ReplyDeleteGreat post Jaden. WONDERFUL comment on the "everything can be negative", this is an excellent point that shows anything can be harmful, even water (that kevin showed us). Soy is probably a better choice than most other foods out there available to us. It has pros the definitally outway the cons. Nice info, good work.
ReplyDeletei agree with you jaden because everything in too large amounts will be harmful to anybody. no matter what it is and i have heard/read somewhere that there was somebody that drank to much water for some reason and died.
